This is the second book of Liane Moriarty’s that I’ve read, the first being “Big Little Lies” which I loved. “What Alice Forgot” is one of her earlier books and I just wanted to know if I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed “Big Little Lies.”
“What Alice Forgot” is about a woman named Alice who finds herself in a gym, dazed and confused, after fainting during her spin class. She wakes up thinking she’s pregnant with her first child, still happily married to her husband, Nick and that she’s 29 years old. The truth is she has 3 children, getting divorced to her husband and is turning 40. She lost 10 years of her memory and this book is her journey towards retrieving those lost memories and deciding whether her decisions for the last 10 years have been everything she thought they would be.
I truly enjoy Liane Moriarty’s style of writing as it is easy to read and her characters are very likeable and it’s not difficult to empathise with them. They are given much thought and identity that they become like friends by the end of the story. That was definitely one of the reasons why I loved Big Little Lies so much so it’s not surprising that I liked “What Alice Forgot” as well. What separates “Big Little Lies” from “What Alice Forgot” is the mystery in the former on the murder that transpired. The reader is kept in the dark until towards the end on who the murderer is and also who the victim is. That, I think, was the best part of the whole experience. In “What Alice Forgot,” there are parts where the author keeps you guessing about events that happened in the past especially when Alice herself is trying to recall the same events. I wouldn’t say the suspense is not there, it is just in a much smaller scale compared to the other book.
All in all, I would say “What Alice Forgot” was a very fun read. It makes you look back to your own past and think what would my past 10 years look like to my old self? Would she like where I am now and what I’ve become? The book makes you think about such internal questions and it’s an interesting thing to think about.
In a related news, “What Alice Forgot” – Movie is apparently in the works and Jennifer Aniston is set to play the lead role. Exciting! I will definitely watch this one once it comes out. Also, “Big Little Lies” will be turned into a film which sounds fantastic. I can’t wait for these two to be turned into movies. I just hope it turns out well on the big screen.
